Medicare in Muskegon

Maximize The Coverage You've Earned

Brendon Enders

Medicare Specialist

Medicare can be confusing. Chances are you have questions: where do I start, how do I know what plan is best for me, and what do I do with all this mail I have been getting?

That is what we are here for. Brendon Enders is a licensed Medicare agent based in Muskegon, and there is no cost to sit down and work through it together. We will answer your questions, walk you through the enrollment process, and help you land on the plan that actually fits how you use health care.

The A B Cs (and Ds) of Medicare

Part A covers inpatient hospital care. Most people pay no premium for it because they paid in through payroll taxes while working.

Part B covers outpatient care — doctor visits, labs, imaging, preventive care, durable medical equipment. It carries a monthly premium and an annual deductible.

Part C is Medicare Advantage. It is a private plan that takes over as your coverage and usually bundles in drug coverage, plus extras Original Medicare does not include.

Part D is prescription drug coverage. You get it either built into a Medicare Advantage plan or as a standalone plan alongside Original Medicare.

There is no Part E, and you do not have to memorize any of this. The practical decision comes down to one fork in the road.

Medicare Advantage or a Medicare Supplement?

Almost everyone on Medicare ends up choosing between two structures, and they work very differently.

A Medicare Advantage plan replaces Original Medicare as your coverage. Premiums are often low or zero, drug coverage is usually built in, and many plans add dental, vision, hearing, and fitness benefits. In exchange you use a network, may need referrals and prior authorizations, and you pay copays as you go up to an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Muskegon County has a healthy number of plans available, so the differences between them matter.

A Medicare Supplement, also called Medigap, sits on top of Original Medicare and pays what Medicare does not. There is no network — any provider in the country who takes Medicare takes your supplement — and your medical bills become very predictable. You pay a higher monthly premium that rises with age, and you buy a separate Part D plan for drugs.

Neither one is better in the abstract. It depends on your doctors, your prescriptions, how much you travel, and how you would rather handle costs — a low premium with copays, or a higher premium with almost none.

One thing worth knowing up front: in Michigan, moving from Advantage to a supplement later usually means passing medical underwriting. That makes the first decision more consequential than most people realize, which is the main reason it is worth talking through with someone rather than guessing.

When you can enroll or change plans

Your Initial Enrollment Period runs for seven months around your 65th birthday — the three months before, your birthday month, and the three months after. If you are still working and covered by an employer group plan, you may be able to delay Part B without a penalty, but that depends on the size of the employer and is worth confirming before you skip it.

Medicare's Annual Enrollment Period runs October 15 through December 7 every year, with changes taking effect January 1. That is the window to switch Advantage plans, change Part D plans, or move between Original Medicare and Advantage.

There is also a Medicare Advantage Open Enrollment Period from January 1 through March 31 for people already in an Advantage plan, plus various Special Enrollment Periods triggered by moving, losing other coverage, or other life changes.

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period is separate and more important to protect: it is a one-time six-month window starting when you are 65 and enrolled in Part B, and it is the only time a supplement carrier cannot turn you down for health reasons.
